My current research interests principally target two main species, even though I’m interested in fish biology and fish evolution as a whole. The first one is one economically important marine species, ranking second in European aquaculture, the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Using high-throughput transcriptomics (RNA-seq) , I’m actually trying to understand the molecular basis of trait variation providing tolerance to fasting and to diseases in sea bass. The second one is a freshwater species, the Mediterranean brown trout (Salmo trutta) that does not undergo migration at sea during its life cycle. I’m interested in the impact of stocking on genome-wide patterns of hybridization using RAD sequencing techniques, and then in conservation related issues in this iconic freshwater species. I’m also interested in the response of fish to extreme environments, especially hypersalinity which is observed in numerous coastal and estuarine environments worldwide.
Since 2011, I’m the first-year supervisor of the graduate (Master) evolutionary biology programme “Darwin”. Since years, I’m also involved in teaching general biology and zoology at undergraduate level, and in one undergraduate course devoted to basic understanding and mechanisms sustaining the genotype-phenotype relationships. Since 2007, I’m managing courses favouring student projects and experiential learning during the third year of their bachelor programme. I’m still or was formerly involved in many other teaching activities, and was departmental coordinator of the Erasmus(+) exchange programme until 2015.
I’m currently at the head of the ‘Fish Evolution’ team since October, 2016.
